Burglar alarm alerts police to marijuana operation

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- A burglar alarm alerts police to a marijuana selling operation, after someone broke into an apartment on Buck Lane.

Agents say that police responded to the apartment because of a burglar alarm. Officers found the back door broken open and went inside. That's where they detected a strong odor of marijuana, and saw pot in plain view.

They got a search warrant and found four pounds of marijuana wrapped for sale, hidden throughout the apartment.

Party City coming to Albany

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Work is underway on a big empty retail space in Albany to bring in a new business and a spirit of celebration.

Party City will open a store at 2709 Dawson Road, near the Albany Mall this August.  Economic development officials say they're excited to see a company bring in jobs and also fill up the former Steinmart location.

Company to bring in businesses for Dougherty County

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The Albany Dougherty County Economic Development Commission has hired a company to help bring in businesses.

Board members met with the Research On Investment group, or ROI, on Wednesday.  The international company was hired on a yearly contract to research and recruit potential businesses to relocate to Albany. Board members have been discussing this idea for three years and it's now moving ahead.

Murdered baby's parents seek justice while funeral looms

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The parents of a murdered baby say they want justice after their longtime friend was charged with killing him.

The parents of 6-month old Ja'Kobian Davis say they can't understand why their son died in the care of a trusted babysitter. Prosecutors say the investigation into the baby's death continues as the accused killer made her first appearance before a judge Wednesday.

Ja'Kobian Davis' parents say he was a wonderful baby - pretty and playful. Wednesday his family grieved together as they made preparations for his funeral.

DCSS police under watch to improve efficiency, cut costs

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Dougherty County School Police are under the watchful eye of some law enforcement veterans this week, as a team of experts is assessing the department as part of a plan to improve the entire school system.

Dr. David Mosely, the interim superintendent says they're assessing many of the departments to look at ways to improve efficiency and cut costs. He says now the police department is under the microscope, but it's nothing to be alarmed about.

Spring weather puts watermelon crops behind

CORDELE, GA (WALB)- Do you have a taste for some good ole' south Georgia watermelon? You might have to wait a little bit.

Farmers are running about three weeks behind after some crazy spring weather made this one of their most difficult seasons ever and sent prices up.

When planting season was a little dry, it caused problems with some crops. And when farmers had to re-plant multiple times, it may have passed rising costs on to the consumer.

Babysitter makes first appearance

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Demetria Porter, charged with causing the death of Ja' Kavion Davis, appeared before a judge at the Dougherty County jail this morning to hear the charges against her.

She is charged with cruelty to a child in the firs degree, and murder in the first degree.

Six month old Ja'Kobian was found dead inside an apartment on Marie Road Sunday morning.  An autopsy indicates homicide by blunt force trauma. 

She has not had a bond hearing yet.
