No county money for NYSP

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Dougherty County Commissioners unanimously denied a $15,000 for the National Youth Sports Program during Monday's Commission meeting.

 Robert Skinner, the NYSP director, outlined the program's services, which includes a drug abuse education program, math and reading programs, and physical activities for youths between the ages of 9-15.

Skinner asked for any amount of funding as the commission reviewed the funding request.

Albany Chamber celebrates small business week

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- When times are tough, small businesses usually take the hardest hit but when things start looking up, they're often the quickest to recover.

That's exactly what the Albany Chamber of Commerce says they've been seeing recently in the area.

"Was a good indication of the success, you know, that our small businesses have had over the last couple of years, but it's still going to take some time to rebound," said Chris Hardy, President and CEO of Albany area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau.

Man injured in hit and run

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA- Dougherty County police are searching for a motorist who hit a pedestrian and then fled the scene.

Authorities say it happened around 11pm Friday near the 3900 block of Radium Springs Road.

Police say the victim was taken to the hospital and suffered a broken leg, lacerations and a head injury. He is expected to survive.  The victim's name has not been released yet.

Westover grads receive special presentation during graduation

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- It's graduation time for high schools in Dougherty County and students are ready to embark on their next journey.

230 graduates received their high school diplomas from Westover Comprehensive High School Saturday morning. This year the school had 54 honor students. Altogether, the Westover grads received over 1 million dollars in scholarships. Many say they're sad their high school experience is over but they're glad to have graduated from Westover High.

Albany schools close for the last time

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Sylvester Road Elementary, Magnolia Elementary and Dougherty County Middle School are shutting down because of budget cuts. Students will be reassigned to new schools next year. For students at those closing schools and the last day brings about mixed emotions.

400 students, teachers and administrators at Sylvester Road Elementary school took part in fun activities and packing up their rooms.

12 years later Albany man will walk in graduation ceremony

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Twelve years after he was supposed to graduate, an Albany man will finally walk across the stage and get his high school diploma Saturday.

31 year old Latreal McDaniel attended graduation practice today with the 2013 Dougherty High School seniors.

Reward offered for stolen heirloom

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- A Dougherty County woman is offering a reward for the return of a rare coin.

The 1923 $20 gold medallion may be worth as much as $25,000. The owner says it has great sentimental value to her. She's asking whoever has it to return it.

Martha Ann Long said her gold medallion coin was a special gift handed down through her family and now she is offering $1,000 no questions asked, to try to get her precious heirloom back.
